Why You Should Love Your Trees

Why You Should Care About Your Trees.

Well, I was drinking a peach-flavored Snapple Tea one day and read the “Real Fact” under the lid.  It stated that a full-grown tree produces enough oxygen to support a family of four.  Another similar statistic from the U.S. Department of Agriculture is that one acre of forest absorbs six tons of carbon dioxide and puts out four tons of oxygen.  This is enough to meet the annual needs of 18 people.  Isn’t that incredible?

We may tend to take our trees for granted and view them as a nuisance when we are cleaning out the gutters or raking the yard; but there are so many benefits and reasons to love our trees.

Their presence makes life more pleasant and serene; in fact, studies have shown that hospital patients recover more quickly from surgery when their hospital room offered a view of trees.  We become personally attached when we plant trees as illustrated by my own personal experience.  Although we don’t own the property any longer, we planted a tree at a previous home we owned when our son was born.  Twenty-nine years later the tree stands tall and straight and invariably when we pass by that house I point to the tree and tell whoever I’m with that my husband planted that tree shortly after our son’s birth.  It means a lot to us.

Amazing Tree Benefits

  • Just three trees properly placed around a house can reduce air-conditioning needs by 30 percent and save 20-50 percent energy used for heating. (USDA Forest Service
  • Healthy, mature trees add an average of 10 percent to a property’s value. (USDA Forest Service
  • In laboratory research, visual exposure to settings with trees has produced significant recovery from stress within five minutes, as indicated by changes in blood pressure and muscle tension. (Dr. Roger S. Ulrich, Texas A&M University
  • Combat the greenhouse effect as they absorb carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, and release oxygen in the air
  • Create food not only for humans but also for birds and wildlife
  • Protect and create a habitat for wildlife.
  • Shield us from ultra-violet rays.
  • Mark the seasons.  You know the time of year by gazing at a tree.
  • Reduce violence.  Trees and landscaping help to reduce the level of fear.

Do you now have a better appreciation for trees?  If you don’t have a tree on your property, think about planting at least one and enjoy it season after season.

Trees are a beautiful creation, very purposeful, and provide us entertainment and relaxation as we watch the squirrels playing tree tag and listen to the birds singing or calling out to one another.
