Gutter Cover of KC Works Despite the Extreme Heat
“Boy it’s Hot!” “I just don’t want them (installers) to work in this heat.” Those are a couple of comments we have received regarding the intense temperatures and the empathy expressed for The Gutter Cover™ installers having to work in these conditions. Unfortunately working in the very hot and very cold is a fact of life in this line of work.
Gutter Cover of Kansas City has taken precautions to enable our workers to work safely in these hot temperatures. At a recent safety meeting information was shared to protect the installers from the effects of heat. This information is good for anyone who spends an appreciable amount of time in the sun whether for work or for pleasure. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) recommends the following:
- Drink small amounts of water frequently.
- Wear light-colored, loose-fitting, breathable clothing – cotton is good.
- Take frequent short breaks in cool shade.
- Avoid caffeine and alcohol or large amounts of sugar.
- Find out from your health care provider if your medications and heat don’t mix.
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat, UV-absorbent sunglasses, and apply a sunscreen with a SPF of at least 30.
For additional information go to www.osha.gov/OshDoc/data_Hurricane_Facts/heat_stress.pdf and www.osha.gov/SLTC/heatstress/recognition.html.
Health problems caused by working in hot temperatures are heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps and heat rash. So it’s advisable to take all the necessary precautions to prevent such problems from occurring. Gutter Cover of Kansas City has covered this information with its employees and provides water and Gatorade for them to take on the job, also encouraging the installers to pace themselves and, if necessary, to work a short day.
It looks like we’re going to get a break from the extreme heat but those who work or play outside will still have to deal with a hot sun and warm temperatures. Please take the necessary steps to protect yourself from the summer weather.
